ortiz0724.jpgPORTLAND, Maine (AP) - Fans who wanted a glimpse of Red Sox slugger David Ortiz had to deal with rain delays and an unwanted visitor in right field.

After Ortiz left the game, a skunk scampered into right field in the middle of the fourth inning, sending a collective "oooh!" through the stands during Wednesday night's game at Hadlock Field. Next, the skunk headed for the picnic area, sending fans scurrying away.

"You never know who or what is going to show up at the ballpark," said Portland Sea Dogs spokesman Chris Cameron. "We've seen squirrels and groundhogs, but never a skunk."

Ortiz left the final game of his six-game rehabilitation assignment after the third inning and was long gone before the skunk's appearance. Ortiz went 5-for-18 (.278) with three home runs, six RBIs and five runs in six games with Triple-A Pawtucket and Double-A Portland.

As for the skunk, he crawled into a hole where he remained. The game between the Sea Dogs and Connecticut Defenders was suspended because of rain after the bottom of the fourth inning.
