BOSTON _ As reported on this blog earlier today, the Red Sox recalled Jed Lowrie from Pawtucket to replace the injured Julio Lugo, who will be out of the lineup 4-6 weeks with a cevere quad tear.

Lowrie left Norfolk this morning and arrived in Boston around 2 p.m. When he got to Fenway Park he was told he was starting tonight against the Orioles. Backup infielder Alex Cora will start at short on Sunday.

"We'll mix and match and try to play them both," said Red Sox manager Terry Francona. "Because of the days off coming up, there's no need to get too far ahead of ourselves."

This is Lowrie's third stint with the Red Sox this season.

"My role on this team is to come up and help when I can," he said. "Lugo got hurt and I'm going to do what I can to help the team win. . . I know what to expect and I know how the routines are done here. RJ (Ron Johnson) does a great job in Pawtucket, trying to keep it as similar as possible."
