Manny Ramirez received 1,000,000 yen for being named MVP of this year's season opener in Tokyo (above); now he's collecting $10,000 of his own from the state of Massachusetts
BOSTON -- You can take Manny Ramirez's name off the list of the famous and not-so-famous who have abandoned property with the state of Massachusetts.
An agent for the Red Sox slugger has completed the process with the state Treasury to claim a $10,000 check that had languished after being written by the Reebok Corp.
The left-fielder also will get back an additional $49.56 in interest in accordance with state rules for vendor payments that go unclaimed and are turned over to the state.
Ramirez joined Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice and others on a February list of those with unclaimed property.
Treasurer Timothy Cahill said in a statement Tuesday that his department wants to return unclaimed money regardless of the owner's name or public stature.
