First baseman Sean Casey was placed on the disabled list because of a neck strain.
In order to make room for David Ross on the active roster, the Sox first had to make room for him on the 40-man roster. They did so by transferring injured shortstop Julio Lugo from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day DL.
The Sox are down a man, featuring only 24 active players tonight because Josh Beckett also was placed on the DL. Boston will add a player after tonight's game.
Adding to their health issues, center fielder Coco Crisp was scratched from the starting lineup because of flu-like symptoms. So Jacoby Ellsbury replaced Crisp in center and batted leadoff, pushing right fielder Mark Kotsay from the top spot in the order down to sixth, which shoved Jed Lowrie and Alex Cora down a notch each.
