BOSTON _ Mike Lowell was removed from the game in the bottom of the 10th inning Friday with a right-hip flexor strain.
After he reached first base on a swinging bunt, he was clearly in pain. He was attended to by manager Terry Francona and trainer Paul Lessard and was replaced by pinch-runner Coco Crisp.
"It's been sore for a pretty good amount of time," said Francona. "We were going to run for him if he got to second because we knew what we were facing. . . We'll go down and visit with the trainers and Mikey and see the best way to go about this thing."
If Lowell can't play, Kevin Youkilis will be shifted to third base, and Sean Casey will play first. If Lowell needs time on the disabled list, it's possible Joe Thurston or Keith Ginter could be recalled from Pawtucket.
