BOSTON -- David Pauley's stay in Boston was brief.
The right-hander, called up during the day on Wednesday from Pawtucket to help fortify the Red Sox bullpen in Wednesday night's game in case of dire bullpen circumstances for a tired relief corps, was optioned back to Pawtucket after Boston's 8-4 win over the Rangers.
First baseman Jeff Bailey has been called up from Pawtucket to replace Pauley on the roster and will be in uniform for Thursday night's series finale against Texas. Bailey, in essence, is actually replacing injured Mike Lowell (strained oblique), who was placed on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday.
Pauley knew such a move would be coming, said manager Terry Francona.

"I talked to David when he came up and told him this was a possibility," said Francona.
