giles0807.jpgThe San Diego Union Tribune is reporting that the Boston Red Sox have claimed veteran San Diego Padres right fielder Brian Giles off the waiver wire. The Red Sox are in the midst of a 48-hour period in which they have exclusive rights to complete a trade for Giles.

Giles is not in the lineup for this afternoon's Padres-Mets game, although manager Bud Black said it is just a typical day off.

The Tribune speculates, however, that the Red Sox may have put in the claim mainly to block Giles from going to the Tampa Bay Rays. If the Padres and the Red Sox fail to work out a trade, San Diego can retain Giles. The Union Tribune reports that Giles' contract lists the Red Sox as one of 10 teams he can veto as trade destinations.

San Diego is 44-70, last place in the National League West.
