Josh Beckett worked eight innings Tuesday night against Tampa Bay. It is the 20th time in 25 starts this season that he has pitched at least six innings. Last year, when he was 20-7, Beckett pitched at least six innings in 25 of his 30 starts.
In contrast, Dice-K, who has a dazzling record of 17-2 this year, has failed to get through the sixth inning in 13 of his 27 starts. He pitched just five innings Monday night, despite being spotted to a 4-0 lead in the first, and cruising with a 12-1 lead going into the last of the fifth. But, having thrown 101 pitches through five innings, despite the huge lead, he was relieved by manager Terry Francona in the sixth.
Matsuzaka has, however, given up just 122 hits in 156.2 innings and has an ERA of 2.93.
