All but one piece of the American League playoff puzzle -- the identity of the Central Division champion -- is now in place, and the dates for the Division Series have been set.

The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, the Western Division champs, clinched the best overall record in the league Thursday and have chosen the eight-day division series. The playoffs thus will open in Anaheim on Wednesday, with the Angels hosting the wild-card winners, the Red Sox.

Tampa Bay, the Eastern Division champion, will host the Central champion, either Chicago or Minnesota, beginning Thursday.

The dates, with game times to be announced:

WEDNESDAY -- Red Sox at Angels, Game 1
THURSDAY -- White Sox/Twins at Rays, Game 1
FRIDAY -- Red Sox at Angels, Game 2; White Sox/Twins at Rays, Game 2
SUNDAY, OCT. 5 -- Angels at Red Sox, Game 3; Rays at Twins/White Sox, Game 3
*MONDAY, OCT. 6 -- Angels at Red Sox, Game 4; Rays at Twins/White Sox, Game 4
*WEDNESDAY, OCT. 8 -- Red Sox at Angels, Game 5; White Sox/Twins at Rays, Game 5

* -- if necessary
