Click the play button below to hear Joe McDonald's comments, recorded this morning. The topics: the implications of scratching Josh Beckett from his Game 1 start, Jon Lester's strength under pressure, and the roster questions surrounding Mike Lowell and J.D. Drew.
Here's what Joe said about Beckett's Game 1 scratch:
"Maybe it's kind of a blessing in surprise, if you really think about it. ... He's battled injuries all season long; he's had the elbow problems, now he's got this oblique issue, which happened during a side session last Friday at Fenway Park. Maybe this week, you give him a little more rest -- maybe it will help. The other thing, with Jon Lester going in Game 1, now you have Jon Lester back at Fenway Park [for a potential Game 4], where he's 11-1 this season. He's been phenomenal at home, and he's really become the ace of the staff this season, with Beckett battling all those injuries. This is a big blow for the Red Sox, not having Josh Beckett, especially the way he can dominate in the postseason, but maybe this just gives him a little more rest before that Game 3 start. And if for some reason he can't go, then we'll probably see Tim Wakefield."
