The Boston Red Sox will open the 2009 season by hosting the Tampa Bay Rays on Monday, April 6 at Fenway Park. Major League Baseball and the Red Sox today released the complete 2009 regular season schedule.
The 2009 season will be the first time since 2002 and just the second occasion in the last 14 years beginning 1996 that the Red Sox have opened the year at Fenway Park. It will be the second time that Tampa Bay has provided the opposition in a season opener (2003 in St. Petersburg) and in a home opener (2001 at Fenway Park).
The Red Sox are scheduled to play a total of 72 games with their A.L. East Division rivals, 18 each with Baltimore, New York, Tampa Bay, and Toronto. The Sox and Yankees will a pair of weekend series at Fenway Park, April 24-26 and August 21-23 with a mid-week set scheduled for June 9-11. Boston will make its first visit to the new Yankee Stadium for games on Monday and Tuesday, May 4-5 to be followed by two weekend series in the Bronx, August 7-9 and September 25-27.
The Red Sox and Rays complete the season's first series on Wednesday and Thursday, April 8-9 before Boston travels to the West Coast for three games each with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim and Oakland A's, April 10-15.
The Sox return to Fenway Park for a nine-game homestand with Baltimore, Minnesota, and New York, April 17-26. Boston has a pair of season high ten-game homestands, July 3-12 with Seattle, Oakland, and Kansas City, and August 21-30 with the Yankees, White Sox, and Blue Jays.
Boston will have 18 games versus National League opponents, hosting Atlanta, Florida, and the New York Mets for three games apiece while playing three-game series at Atlanta, Philadelphia, and Washington.
