ANAHEIM, Calif. -- The moment of truth is finally at hand for Red Sox veterans Mike Lowell and J.D. Drew.
The Red Sox are in the midst of their workout today and both Lowell and Drew will be watched very closely. Lowell will take grounders at third base and test his injured hip flexor. Drew's creaky back has responded well to playing on Sunday and traveling Monday and he's expecting to be able to play tomorrow night.
Asked if there's any question he'll be on the roster for the series, Drew said, `No, I don't think so.'
"I'm pretty confident. I feel decent after the flight and I'll get a good workout today and see how it goes," Drew said. "You can't predict anything. You just continue with the treatment and keep it going. Running, by far, has been the issue. But it felt good playing the game the other day."
Lowell said his status is very much up in the air.
"I'm going to try to do everything, but the writing will be on the wall," he said. "I'll either keel over because it really hurts or I won't. I don't think there's going to be any mystery.''
Asked if he thinks he'll be on the roster, Lowell said, "I don't know. That's a decision that [manager Terry Francona] is going to make. But whether I'm starting or not, I think within two hours it'll be a pretty easy choice.''
Lowell is currently taking light throws at third and will be seeing grounders and attempt to hit in the cage soon.
