No one was doing the River Dance, stripping into their skivies or pulling any other embarrassing move but the Red Sox are currently celebrating their fifth playoff appearance in the last six seasons.
The Sox beat the Indians, 5-4, to punch their playoff ticket. Right now they're the wild card team in the American League and looking at a trip to Anaheim next week. Tampa Bay is closing in on the A.L. East title as we speak but the Red Sox are content to celebrate anyway. Game One of the Division Series will come next Wednesday or Thursday.
``This is something I can definitely get used to,'' said Jason Bay, the key mid-season pick up in the Manny Ramirez trade. "I feel like I'm part of the puzzle right now. Every night, someone different comes through for this team."
Terry Francona, owner of the greatest post-season record (by percentage) of any manager in baseball history (22-9, .710), is thrilled to be going back to baseball's biggest stage.
``It's great," he said. ``It's probably a little different every time, different emotions, but it certainly doesn't become less enjoyable or less satisfying. It's nice to know that we have more baseball to play."
As the players celebrated on the field after the final out, Francona and the rest of his coaching staff stood on the first base line and watched. After a few minutes of hugs and high-fives, the players filed into the dugout and made sure to hug their manager on the way into a wild clubhouse that was filled with spraying champagne and beer.
``It's their field, they play. It gives them a chance to celebrate together then we can tell them as they come off how much we appreciate them."
