| ALCS Game Five pregame notes: Ellsbury watching from the dugout -- again. »
BY JOE McDONALD BOSTON -- A report Thursday morning claimed Red Sox pitcher Josh Beckett has a torn oblique. Manager Terry Francona moments ago dismissed the report, saying it's not true. "No," he said. "He doesn't have that. He went through a side (two days ago). I don't know how to answer something that's not true." The right-hander suffered an oblique strain during a bullpen session the last weekend of the regular season. "I don't think anybody is capable of [pitching with a torn oblique], or would we let him," Francona said. "If it was torn he wouldn't have been able to do what he did." In two postseason starts he's 0-0 with a 11.57 ERA in 9 1/3 innings pitched. He's allowed 12 runs on 18 hits with five home runs. Francona later took a shot at the reporter, Tom Verducci of Sports Illustrated, saying: "When the media chooses to be not completely professional, we get put in a tough position.'' |
