| ALCS Game Seven pregame: Rays ready for seven »
BY JOE McDONALD ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Rocco Baldelli and Dan Wheeler aren't the only Rhode Island connections on the Tampa Bay Rays. Rays play-by-play radio broadcaster Andy Freed served as the voice of the Pawtucket Red Sox for four seasons before being hired here in 2005. He's had a up-close-and-personal look at the upstart Rays for four seasons and he's been enjoying the ride in 2008. "This has been exhilarating and dream-like," said Freed. "This has been something out of the movies." During spring training he knew the team was going to good, but he recalled a moment in June when he sat down with manager Joe Maddon and asked him if he thought the Rays would make the playoffs. "He said 'At this point, if we don't I'll be disappointed.' That swung me on board that this was a little more legit than even we thought. It was more than a hot streak and more than a fluke. To me there's been a changing of the guard at the top of the American League." No matter the outcome of Game Seven Sunday night, Freed said he's thrilled to be a part of the Rays baseball family. "I've always been proud to be with this franchise," he said. "I saw what was going on just from being here more than a lot of other people were able to from around the country. We knew this was coming, maybe not to this degree, or this soon, but they are a tremendous group of individuals." |
