ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Just because it's October doesn't mean the Red Sox are done with roster moves.

Boston claimed right-hander Dewon Day off waivers Friday afternoon. To make room for him on the 40-man roster, the Red Sox designated pitcher Chris Smith for assignment.

Day, 28, was 0-3, 4.56 in 21 relief appearances at Triple-A Charlotte and 1-6, 6.61 in 14 games (13 starts) at Double-A Birmingham in 2008. The righthander recorded 60 strikeouts in 71.1 innings. Day has spent the last three seasons in the White Sox organization after being selected by the White Sox from Toronto in the December 2005 minor league draft. He pitched in 13 games with the White Sox in 2007, going 0-1, 11.25 in his only major league action. Day was originally selected by Toronto in the 2002 draft.

Smith was 1-0 with a 7.85 ERA in 12 relief appearances in his major league debut with the Red Sox in 2008. He spent most of the season at Triple-A Pawtucket, going 1-5, 3.19 with 15 saves in 37 games.
