| ALCS workout day: Ortiz not worried »
BOSTON -- We'll be reading and hearing all sorts of talk about the Red Sox digging out of a 3-1 ALCS hole for the third time in five years. It's baloney. Curt Schilling and his bloody sock, Pedro Martinez and his golden arm and Manny Ramirez and his booming bat are not walking through that door, folks. There may be a new fleet of comeback heroes on the Red Sox roster but so many of the players were not here in 2004 and 2007 (Masterson, Bay, Lowrie, Kotsay, ect.) or didn't play a significant role in `07 that it's tough to buy into that stuff. Agreed. The 2008 edition of the Red Sox just don't have the arms or the bats to mount a comeback like those other teams. Also, it is really hard to imagine the Rays crumbling like the Yankees or Indians. It's time for Theo to start thinking about retooling for 2009.

Two comments were made in the last 24 hours that pretty much sum up the position the Sox are in. First, Coco Crisp was reported to have said, "These are not the Cleveland Indians." Second, someone wrote in the Globe these are not the 2007 Red Sox. The Rays are the better team. Maybe they can find a way out but the hole is deeper this time round.
