BOSTON -- Paul Byrd came into the game in the sixth inning to keep the Red Sox within striking distance.

After Rocco Baldelli hit a three-run shot off the Sports Authority sign atop the Green Monster in the eighth inning, he had a new role: Finish the game and save the bullpen for Game Four.

"I battled, did my best, a little frustrated with the number of runs I gave up, but hopefully, maybe, it'll mean something to the guys in the pen," Byrd said.

Byrd surrendered 4 runs in 3.1 innings. But if there were a crisis situation Tuesday night, the converted starter said he could pitch again.

"I didn't throw that many pitches, really. I'm used to 80, 90, 100 pitches. I feel good, I didn't feel like I threw the ball much, or that I'm overextended.

"I could throw tomorrow if they needed me to."

Despite his line, Byrd said he felt pretty good about his outing, beyond the one mistake he threw to Baldelli.

"I felt like I was helping us there for a while -- they're hot right now. I really didn't feel like I was pitching that bad. I made one bad pitch, a hanging slider to Baldelli, and he hit it out," Byrd said.
