Red Sox pitching coach John Farrell has declined an invitation to interview for the vacant managerial job with the Seattle Mariners.
It has been reported that Farrell, along with Red Sox bench coach Brad Mills and third-base coach DeMarlo Hale are all being considered for the position. Mills interviewed Monday and Hale is expected to meet with the Mariners Tuesday.
Farrell released this statement Monday night:
"I have withdrawn my name for consideration by the Seattle Mariners as they search for a new manager. I wish them well as they move forward. My decision is based on family reasons and being committed to the Red Sox Organization. The working relationship shared with Theo and Tito and the resources provided by John Henry, Tom Werner, and Larry Lucchino create a situation that is both challenging and rewarding."
Farrell was offered an interview for the manager's job with the Pittsburgh Pirates prior to the 2008 season, but declined that offer, too.
How can you not like a man who believes in his organization and stands by his commitments? Nice going Mr. Farrell.
