| Report: Red Sox nearing agreement with Josh Bard »
The Red Sox are close to signing right-hander Brad Penny to a one-year contract, according to Foxsports.com. Penny, 29, struggled with the Dodgers last year, suffering from a sore shoulder and going 6-9 with a 6.27 ERA in 17 starts and two relief appearances. But he was 16-4 with a 3.03 ERA in 2007 and 16-9 with a 4.33 ERA in 2006 for L.A. A former teammate of Sox ace Josh Beckett, he helped the Marlins win a World Series championship in 2003, going 14-10 with a 4.13 ERA. In his career, all of which has been spent in the National League with Florida (2000-04) and Los Angeles (2004-08), Penny is 94-75 with a 4.06 ERA. Read the Foxsports.com report here.
