According to The Boston Globe's Tony Massarotti, free-agent pitcher A.J. Burnett has eliminated the Red Sox and the Blue Jays from his list of possible teams and will end up with either the Yankees or the Braves. The New York Daily News is reporting that the Yankees are also "making a big push" to sign former Red Sox sinker baller Derek Lowe. Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports reported that, according to a baseball source, the Yankees will not sign both Lowe and Burnett, but that they might sign one of the two plus another free agent pitcher -- possibly Ben Sheets and possibly Andy Pettitte. Rosenthal reports the Yankees are offering Burnett five years at $91 million, which means that they are in good position to blow away the market once again. In other Yankee news, the team is about to send outfielder Melky Cabrera to Milwaukee in a trade for Mike Cameron, according to today's New York Daily News. Cabrera, who just a year ago was being touted as the Yankees' center fielder of the future, fizzled last year. Cameron might not be a big offensive upgrade, though: He has hit just .243 and .242 the past two seasons with Milwaukee and San Diego. |
