The Mark Teixeira Sweepstakes may soon have a winner.

And it appears that winner may be the Red Sox.

Multiple media outlets reported last night that members of Boston's management team - owner John Henry, president/CEO Larry Lucchino and general manager Theo Epstein -- flew to Teixeira's home state of Texas on Thursday as negotiations with the All-Star first baseman apparently neared a conclusion. Teixeira's agent, Scott Boras, was due to meet with the Sox Thursday night.

The Red Sox were said to have made an eight-year, $184 million offer that exceeded, by $20 million, the eight-year offer made by Teixeira's last team, the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. The Boston Herald speculated the round of meetings may have been designed by the Teixeira camp to goad the Angels into sweetening their proposal, but the strategy doesn't appear likely to succeed.

The Angels' general manager, Tony Reagins, told the Riverside Press-Enterprise Thursday night that he "felt we put a fair offer on the table. Whether that gets it done or not, we don't know." When asked if the Angels would consider increasing the proposal, Reagins reiterated that they had already made "a fair offer."

Teixeira has also received offers from the Washington Nationals and Baltimore Orioles, but he has reportedly narrowed his choices to the Red Sox or the Angels.

An agreement with Boston may be announced as early as Friday.
