By Joe McDonald LAS VEGAS _ Even though the Yankees made life a little more difficult for the Red Sox in the A.L. East yesterday by signing CC Sabathia to a seven-year deal worth $161 million, Boston GM Theo Epstein had nothing but high remarks for the pitcher. Epstein, manager Terry Francona and pitching coach John Farrell met with Sabathia last Monday. Because the deal wasn't finalized with the Yankees Wednesday night Epstein would say whether or not they made an offer to the hurler. "He was clearly the top pitcher on the market," he said. "He pitched great and what he did down the stretch with Milwaukee was really admirable and great for baseball. He put the interest of his team before his own interest. He had a huge contract waiting for him and he's taking the ball on a few days rest. That was fun to watch and he earned a lot of respect. It's nice to see him get rewarded." Epstein figured since the Yankees offer was roughly $60 million more than another club was willing to offer, it was a sure sign New York would land him. "It's a strong signing," he said. "He was the best out there. I don't it comes as a surprise." |
