BOSTON (AP) -- Longtime Boston Red Sox scout Matt Sczesny, credited with signing players such as Mo Vaughn, John Valentin and Bob Stanley, has died.

The team announced Monday night that the 76-year-old Sczesny died Sunday in Long Island, N.Y., after battling cancer. He scouted for the Red Sox from 1971 through the 2008 season.

Sczesny played at St. John's University. He was a minor league infielder for the Red Sox from 1954-1959, missing the 1957 season for military service, and managed in Boston's farm system for 11 years before becoming a scout.

Sczesny is survived by his wife Joan, son Matthew Sczesny Jr., a daughter-in-law and two grandsons.

Funeral services are planned for Thursday in Deer Park, N.Y.
