Red Sox sign Papelbon and Lopez

The Red Sox today avoided what was expected to be an arbitration battle with Jonathan Papelbon when they reached agreement with the star closer on a one-year contract.

SI.com is reporting the deal is worth $6.25 million. That would be a record for a reliever in his first year of arbitration eligibility.

They also signed left-handed reliever Javier Lopez to a one-year contract, avoiding arbitration with him as well.
