WEEI's Rob Bradford reports that free-agent infielder Alex Cora is close to signing a one-year, $2-million deal with the New York Mets. Cora has been with the Red Sox since mid-2005 and has served as the team's primary backup in the middle infield, but with Julio Lugo and Jed Lowrie both on the roster, the Sox apparently were not interested in re-signing Cora. Lugo stays, and Cora goes? Man...bad move. At least Cora could have provided solid late inning defense or even during the occasional spot start. I thought of all the moves the Sox made this off season, Lugo was a definite goner.
