Early in his minor league career, Michael Bowden was known as "rain man." Whenever he was scheduled to pitch, the skies would open up. His teammates started to look at him as a guaranteed rain delay. He's still got the touch. Today, Bowden waited through -- or, perhaps, caused -- a two-hour, 39 minute rain delay before taking the mound against the Marlins. "I'll tell you what, rain days like this is one of the most mentally draining things starting pitchers can go through. I had to prepare three different times today, so that part's difficult. Once he was in there, it was tough to get his timing after his three warmup sessions. "I'd like to say I was three times more prepared than normal, but i don't know," Bowden chuckled. "It felt a little rushed out there, I couldn't get in a good rhythm". Bowden allowed three hits and one run in three innings of work, getting out of a jam to end the third with a strike-'em-out, throw-'em-out double play with the help of George Kottaras. Bowden was relieved; Jorge Cantu swung at a bad pitch that should have been ball four. On the other side, Red Sox prospect Anibal Sanchez plowed through the Red Sox lineup for four innings, pitching an efficient perfect game until Nick Green broke it up with a single to left. The Red Sox then loaded the bases and manufactured a run. Green later drove in another run with a single. The game was eventually called in the 8th inning. The Sox were ahead 4-3, and they were declared the winners. |
