Two more players have been told they won't be coming to Boston, and will be starting the season at Triple-A Pawtucket. Infielder Gil Velazquez and outfielder Chip Ambres have been told they will be sent down soon, though no roster moves have yet been made.
Velazquez, 29, made the trip to Clearwater with the team today and played second base.
The career minor leaguer got his first major league callup last fall, when Mike Lowell's injured hip forced him to the bench. Velazquez had one hit in eight at-bats.
"He was in the right place at the right time, and he was the right person," manager Terry Francona said of his callup.
Coming into today's game, he was hitting .294 this spring, with two doubles and four RBI.
"He's real reliable, he's a great kid," Francona said.
Ambres did not make the trip today. The outfielder, who has seen major league time with Kansas City, San Diego, and the New York Mets. He was having a poor spring, hitting .129 with two home runs in 129 at-bats.
129 at-bats??? Did his spring training start in December??
