Boston Starter Tim Wakefield was knocked around by the Tampa Bay Rays in his third spring training start yesterday, giving up four runs in three innings.
Only three of the runs were earned, however, after left fielder Jeff Bailey lost a high fly ball in the sun, allowing Tampa Bay's Ben Zobrist to reach third. Zobrist then scored on a single by Shawn Riggans.
Wakefield and catcher Josh Bard also had some initial trouble getting on the same page, with several balls going to the backstop in the first few innings. Wakefield gave up two hits, hit a batter, and issued one walk.
Wes Littleton is now pitching for the Red Sox, who trail 4 to 1 after four.
