Who would have thought that at any point in the year, gold-glover Kevin Youkilis would be leading the Red Sox in errors?

On the second day of the year, it doesn't take much to hold that dubious honor. But after an error-free first day for the entire team, Youkilis committed the first Red Sox error of the season.

With Jason Bartlett on first and none out, Carl Crawford bounced a grounder to Youkilis at first base. Instead of going for the definite out at first, Youkilis made an ill-advised throw to try and nail the speedy Bartlett at second.

Youkilis uncorked a slightly errant throw to second, that bounced off Bartlett and skittered into left field. Even if the throw had been perfect, it was probably a bad idea. was already there by the time Youkilis' throw reached the bag,

Youkilis set a record when he went 238-straight games from 2006 to 2008 without an error at first base. He finished last year with four errors committed at first base, and three at third base. He won a gold glove in 2007 at first base, where he has the second-best fielding percentage (.9972) among players with 350 games at the position.
