By Joe McDonald BOSTON _ While the rest of the Red Sox team was clearly locked in against the Yankees on Saturday afternoon at Fenway Park, Josh Beckett was not. Boston's starter lasted only five innings (plus two batters in the sixth) and allowed eight runs on 10 hits with four walks and three strikeouts. Fortunately he could deal with a no-decision as the Sox eventually won the marathon game, 16-11, but the right-hander finished with 116 pitches (70 strikes) in the outing. He struggled from the start when he threw 36 pitches in the first inning. "I felt good physically," said Beckett. "Obviously the results weren't exactly where you want them to be. Your team scores eight runs and anything less than a win, you feel pretty dismal about. The guys kept battling and fighting and it just shows the character of this clubhouse. As far as a personal standpoint, it's frustrating." According to Red Sox manager Terry Francona, Beckett was too strong and couldn't find his command. As hard as Beckett was on himself for his sub-par performance, he came up big in the top of the fifth inning. After trailing 6-0, the Red Sox scored five runs in the bottom of the fourth to cut their deficit. Beckett quickly retired the side in order in the fifth on 10 pitches to allow the offense to get back at it. Boston responded with three more runs for an 8-6 advantage. "It was big, but we played good defense today. It was definitely a team deal today with the exception of me," Beckett said. Unfortunately, Francona decided to give him one more inning and it turned out to be a bad decision. Beckett walked the Yankees' Derek Jeter to lead off the inning before he surrendered a two-run homer to Johnny Damon to tie the game at 8-8. "I got a little greedy and tried to get a little bit more out of him," said Francona. "He left the ball out over the plate to Johnny and that was tough to take." "It was a frustrating day, it really was from the first pitch on," he said. CommentsLeave a comment |
