Francona on Lowrie: surgery possible, yes, but don't panic yet

Shortstop Jed Lowrie said Friday that he is considering surgery on his ailing left wrist; manager Terry Francona said Saturday that Lowrie probably spoke too soon.

"There are a lot of possibilities. I think he may be getting a little ahead of himself," Francona said today, doing his best to stamp out speculation on his opening day shortstop having season-ending surgery.

That's a possibility, yes, but Francona said that Lowrie was probably just listing every possibility.

"He's a little down, and he kind of blurted out the good, the bad, and the ugly," Francona said.

The Red Sox want more opinions on Lowrie's wrist before they decide what to do. With that in mind, Lowrie got on a plane this afternoon for Arizona, where he will meet with specialist Dr. Donald Sheridan.

"I think we're more comfortable having him get looked at again, and then going from there,"

Lowrie received two cortisone shots in the wrist earlier this week to reduce swelling, and met with a specialist in Baltimore on Wednesday.

Nick Green has replaced Lowrie in the lineup so far, and done an admirable job. But Green should soon be supplanted by Julio Lugo, who will finish his own rehab from a torn meniscus in his right knee.

Lugo played in an extended spring training game in Florida today, notching four innings at shortstop and getting six total at-bats. He had two walks and a hit, and "Played very aggressively in the field. All the reports came back very good on Lugo," Francona said.
