One day after Hal Steinbrenner acknowledged that some seats at the new Yankee Stadium are too expensive (the average ticket at the new Stadium is now close to $50 more expensive than the average MLB ticket), I read news that some Home Depot stores in the tri-state area will be selling official Yankees grass seed and pallets of sod, starting today. The product comes from Long Island's DeLea Sod Farms, which has been doing the turf for the Bombers since the days of Mickey Mantle. The price is expected to be $1.50 per square foot for the sod, and $30 for a 3-pound bag of grass seed, according to the AP. Wow. As Consumer Reports points out, sod is generally 8 cents to 30 cents per square foot, and you can have it professionally installed for double that. Boston fans: Don't feel left out. According to The New York Times, the people behind this idea have visions of selling Red Sox and Cubs sod, as well. |
