By Joe McDonald BOSTON _ David Ortiz is known for his generosity. Now he's going to share even more of his wealth to ensure that less-fortunate families can still enjoy coming to a baseball game at Fenway Park. The Red Sox slugger announced on Sunday the creation of his Papi Cares 2009 initiative. It will be a season-long ticket program that will provide families facing difficult financial problems, due to the weak economy, the opportunity to attend games. A different family will be selected for each home game for the entire season. "These are tough times and it's important that we all step up and find ways to help each other," he said. "Baseball is a family game and Papi Care program will give special families an opportunity to spend time together at the ballpark." Each family will receive four right-field field box tickets purchased by Ortiz. Families will also receive food vouchers for concession items at the park, along with T-shirts and a gift bag from the Red Sox. "David's generosity is legendary among his family, friends and fans," said Red Sox owner John Henry. "The Papi Cares program represents the true spirit of what it means to be a Boston Red Sox and we are proud to play a small part in David's effort to bring joy to families in need." Families will be selected from various community groups and non-profit organizations throughout New England. Inquiries can be sent to the Red Sox via email at Fanfeedback@redsox.com or with a letter to Papi Cares 2009 c/o Boston Red Sox, 4 Yawkey Way, Boston, 02215. |
