Shortstop Julio Lugo appears a little rusty in his first game since undergoing knee surgery in March. Lugo struck out swinging in his first two at-bats, on seven total pitches. He swung very early on Rochester pitcher Kevin Mulvey's change-ups, but has looked smooth in the field.
Pitcher Clay Buchholz, also making his first start since suffering a hamstring injury that caused him to skip his last turn in the rotation, has had an up-and-down game. After two perfect innings against the Red Wings, he loaded the bases on two walks and a single, and then allowed a Luke Hughes two-run single into left to tie the game 2-2 before getting a ground ball to end the inning.
Centerfielder Jonathan Van Every, playing his first game since a spring training ankle sprain, appears to be ready for everyday playing. He just missed a home run in his first at-bat when his deep fly ball landed just past the left-field foul pole, but Van Every recovered with a 375-foot double to deep center, and then scored on a Paul McAnulty single.
