Red Sox send down Buchholz, put five on DL

The Red Sox roster has been known for some time, but the team made some decisions official this afternoon by placing several players on the disabled list and sending others to the minor leagues.

With Brad Penny healthy and ready to make his first start this weekend, Clay Buchholz was optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket. He now has one minor-league option remaining.


Outfielder Mark Kotsay, who had back surgery performed in January, was placed on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to March 27. Kotsay is expected to be back by May 1. His spot on the roster is being filled by Chris Carter in the interim.

Shortstop Julio Lugo, who had surgery in mid-March to repair a torn meniscus in his right knee, was placed on the 15-day disabled list, also retroactive to the 27th.

Pitcher John Smoltz, recovering from surgery to repair several problems in his shoulder, was placed on the 15-day DL retroactive to March 27 with right shoulder surgery. Smoltz threw a bullpen session today, and could be back in Mid-May at the earliest.

The sox placed pitcher Miguel Gonzalez on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to March 27. Gonzalez underwent Tommy John surgery on his right elbow. early last month.

Outfielder Jonathan Van Every, who suffered a bad right ankle sprain during spring training, was also placed on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27. He expects to be ready for the Pawtucket Red Sox home opener on April 19.
