OAKLAND, Calif. _ The diagnosis on Jed Lowrie's ailing left wrist turned out to be not as bad as what the Red Sox first thought.
The Red Sox shortstop was examined by hand specialist Dr. Thomas Graham on Wednesday in Baltimore and the results were positive. At this point, Lowrie won't need surgery and will only miss 3 to 4 weeks.
He received two cortisone shots in the area of the discomfort and is going to be placed in a splint for five days before he begins his strengthening program. According to Red Sox manager Terry Francona, Lowrie should be able to resume baseball activities in a couple of weeks.
"The news is very good as opposed to what it could have been," said Red Sox manager Terry Francona. "After he got his injections, he immediately showed very good strength, which is a great sign."
Lowrie, who turns 25 on Friday, was placed on the 15-day DL (retroactive to April 12) with a sprain. He played with a non-displaced fracture in the same wrist for the majority of the 2008 season.
He returned to Boston on Monday and was examined by three doctors on the Red Sox' medical staff. Team physician Dr. Thomas Gill determined it would be best for Lowrie to visit with Dr. Graham, who is the chief at the Curtis National Hand Center in Baltimore.
In the meantime, Nick Green continues to impress, especially defensively.
During Tim Wakefield's no-hit bid on Wednesday, Green made two dramatic plays, including a spectacular diving grab in the seventh inning to keep the no-no secure.
"He played a really good game today," said Francona. "He's got some hits and he's done a good job. (The catch in the seventh) was a very athletic play. It was exciting to see him make the play."
Green is beginning to get comfortable at the plate, too.
"I feel great," he said. "I think it's great that I get to play every day. The more you can get in there, and the more chances to can get to hit, the more comfortable to get at the plate. I feel good in the field and I just want to keep it going."
Dude, "Results Positive" would mean it was broken or something. Title should be "Results negative" or "Prognosis Good". I wonder why the newspapers can't hold on to their readers.
