Pitcher John Smoltz continues to progress in his rehab from shoulder surgery -- but as with all things, some days are better than others.

Smoltz threw 20 pitches of live batting practice at the Sox' minor league complex in Ft. Myers, FL today, and he wasn't as sharp as he has been in previous outings. The team had hoped to get him into a simulated game soon, but he may need to throw another batting practice session or bullpen session first.

"There's obviously some rust. We may have him go through another facing hitters, or a bullpen session, just before we can get him into a two-inning game, to shake the rust off him," manager Terry Francona said.

Smoltz has been pleased by his progress in general, but is such a fierce competitor that every minor hiccup bothers him.

"For the most part, [he was] pretty upbeat. You know, he wants to be perfect. We're going to talk to him again on Monday about the next step.

The 41-year-oldSmoltz is still on track to return by June, or perhaps Mid-May at the earliest.
