The Mets won their first game in their new home ballpark, Citi Field, beating the Red Sox 4-3 in a marathon game interrupted by a rain delay.
The loss came after the two teams waited through a 67 minute rain-soaked pause in the top of the sixth inning. It had rained hard this afternoon, and then in the top of the sixth a heavy downpour soaked the field.
The game was put on delay at 8:07 p.m., with the Mets leading 3-1 in the top of the sixth inning and Mike Lowell at the plate. The rain soon slowed, then stopped, and the teams returned at 9:14 p.m. Lowell was replaced by pinch hitter Angel Chavez, who quickly grounded out to second base to end the top of the sixth.
Trailing 4-1, Sox scraped together runs in the seventh and eighth, but it wasn't enough against the Mets, who had worked a tight strike zone for 10 walks against starter Jon Lester and relievers Manny Delcarmen and Marcus McBeth to build their lead.
