Sox not expecting last-minute moves

The Red Sox seem content to stand pat and go into Tuesday's opening day with the team they have, rather than go out and acquire some reinforcements until injured players return.

Mark Kotsay and Julio Lugo will both start the season on the disabled list. Names like the recently released Frank Catalanatto and the Reds' Jeff Keppinger have floated around as potential short term fixes, but it's not clear that the team sees acquiring them as worth the investment. For now, the team appears satisfied with Chris Carter and Nick Green as competent fill-ins.

"It looks like we have our team," manager Terry Francona said.

That said, the Sox are certainly open to last-minute moves. Green and Carter have been told that they are making the roster on the condition that another player might be brought in at any time -- but nothing appears imminent.

"I mean, Theo was pretty honest with everybody that this time of year, things can happen -- that I don't think are scheduled to happen, that's probably the best way to put it," Francona said.

Francona said that in the days before opening day, every team tries to fill its holes, and he is sure that the Sox have been talking up possibilities as well. Several "name" players are suddenly free agents, including Catalanatto and Gary Sheffield

"Phones are probably ringing all over the league because this time of year that's kind of what happens," Francona said.
