ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- John Smoltz had worked up to throwing a full batting practice twice in Ft. Myers but the Red Sox have decided to sit the veteran pitcher for a spell and halt his rehab from offseason arm surgery.

Smoltz is expected to travel from his home in Atlanta and join the team in Tampa this weekend. He'll meet with team doctors and pitching coach John Farrell and a plan will be drawn up on when he'll resume his throwing program.

Manager Terry Francona stressed that Smoltz isn't injured, but everyone is simply progressing with caution.

"He'll come down here Saturday and stay with us a little while," said Francona. "I think the way he put it is, if he was already in a game he wouldn't even think about it. Well, he's not. And the whole thing is to look at the big picture, so that's basically what it is."
