PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - The Portland Sea Dogs got strong pitching from Junichi Tazawa in the season opener Thursday, but couldn't muster any offense in its 3-0 loss to the Connecticut Defenders. Click here to see the box score. The 22-year-old Tazawa, a Boston Red Sox pitching prospect from Japan, took the loss despite allowing only one run and four hits in five innings at Hadlock Field. He struck out seven. Tazawa signed a $3.3-million, three-year contract with the Red Sox in December after pitching for four seasons in the in Japanese Industrial League. Sea Dogs batters could manage only four hits as Portland took the loss as the Double-A Eastern League season got under way. |
