renteria0422.jpg-Edgar Renteria drove in five runs, four of them on a grand-slam in the fourth inning against Jake Peavy, to lead the host San Francisco Giants to an 8-3 victory over the San Diego Padres. Renteria's grand slam was the seventh of his career and the first ever allowed by Peavy; it was easily his best game since coming to the Giants, where he had been hitting just .200 entering the game.

-Happy to be out of Boston, the Baltimore Orioles ended their five-game losing streak with a 10-3 victory over the visiting Chicago White Sox. Brad Bergesen, 23, gave up one run in five-plus innings to get the win in his major-legue debut. He had to wait through a 1-hour, 38-minute rain delay before taking the mound for the first time.

-Carlos Lee hit a two-run home run and scrap-heap pickup Russ Ortiz won his third decision since 2005 as the Houston Astros ended the Los Angeles' Dodgers eight-game winning streak with an 8-5 victory in Houston. Houston pitcher Jose Valverde closed out the game despite taking a hard grounder, hit by Orlando Hudson, off his heel, but he was having trouble walking after the game.

-The Texas Rangers continued their tradition of success against Blue Jays ace Roy Halladay, getting home runs from Nelson Cruz and Ian Kinsler en route to a 5-4 win in Toronto. Halladay's career E.R.A. against Texas is 5.36, higher than any American League opponent. The game was delayed for 10 minutes when home-plate umpire Kerwin Danley was hit in the head by a broken bat; Danley was taken to the hospital with a possible concussion.

-The Cleveland Indians tied a team record by turning six double plays -- in six consecutive innings -- and Grady Sizemore hit a three-run home run in an 8-7 victory over the Kansas City Royals in Cleveland.

-For the second time in this young season, a fielding miscue by left fielder Daniel Murphy helped cost the New York Mets a game. Murphy misplayed a fly ball into a triple to set up the go-ahead run in the St. Louis Cardinals' 6-4 victory in St. Louis. A little over a week ago, an error by Murphy led to the Marlins' only two runs in a 2-1 loss in New York.

-Jarrod Washburn went to 3-0 for the first time since 1998, throwing seven strong innings to lead the host Seattle Mariners to a 4-2 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays.

In other news

-The New York Yankees got good news on right fielder Xavier Nady, learning that he won't need surgery on his injured right elbow. Nady will still miss four to six weeks.

-The Pittsburgh Pirates got bad news on catcher Ryan Doumit, who will be out eight to 10 weeks with a broken bone in his right wrist.

-Oakland Athletics reliever Joey Devine is out for the season following right-elbow surgery. Devine was excellent last season for Oakland, going 6-1 with an 0.59 E.R.A. and one save.
