OAKLAND, Calif. _ It appears Red Sox shortstop Jed Lowrie is hurt because Gil Velazquez has been called up from Pawtucket.
Lowrie did not play against the Angels on Sunday and Red Sox manager Terry Francona said he was giving him the day off.
Lowrie played with a non-displaced fracture in his left wrist for the majority of last season. During spring training this year, he said he was healthy. It's not known at this point if it's his wrist again.
He joins Julio Lugo, who is rehabbing from knee surgery.
Velazquez, 29, made his major-league debut with the Red Sox last September.
