-Melky Cabrera hit a walk-off home run in the 14th inning, his second home run of the game, as the New York Yankees beat the Oakland Athletics, 9-7, in a game that lasted nearly five hours. It was the first walk-off at the new stadium, where a record-breaking 26 home runs have been hit in the first six games. -The Pittsburgh Pirates completed a surprising three-game home sweep of the Florida Marlins with a 7-4 victory. Pittsburgh's Adam LaRoche had four hits, and his little brother Andy drove in two runs. -Cliff Lee, the 2008 Cy Young Award winner, lost his third game, matching his total from last season, as the Cleveland Indians fell to the Kansas City Royals, 2-0, in Cleveland. Brian Bannister pitched six shutout innings for the Royals in his first game since being called up from Triple-A. -Dan Haren pitched seven shutout innings as the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Colorado Rockies, 2-0, in Phoenix. Haren is 1-3 despite an outstanding 1.38 E.R.A. -The Washington Nationals continued to be the laughingstock of baseball, losing at home to the Atlanta Braves, 1-0, with the game's only run scoring on a ninth-inning, bases-loaded walk. Starting pitchers Jair Jurrjens (Braves) and John Lannan (Nationals) were both outstanding, but Nationals reliever Mike Hinckley stole the show by walking Kelly Johnson to plate Casey Kotchman with the game-winning run. -After nine innings of scoreless baseball, pinch-hitter Bengie Molina hit an RBI double to give the host San Francisco Giants a 1-0 victory over the San Diego Padres. -Johnny Cueto pitched seven scoreless innings in the Cincinnati Reds' 3-0 victory over the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field. -Joel Pineiro pitched into the ninth inning despite not striking out a single batter as the host St. Louis Cardinals beat the New York Mets, 5-2. In other news -Milwaukee Brewers relief pitcher David Riske may need Tommy John surgery to address looseness in his ulnar collateral ligament. -A CBS Sports story indicated that the Cleveland Indians are willing, and perhaps eager, to trade starting pitcher Cliff Lee. -The personnel woes continued for the Los Angeles Angels, who placed reliever Darren Oliver on the 15-day disabled list and moved starter Kelvim Escobar to the 60-day disabled list to make room for minor-league callup Matt Palmer. -Fireballing Detroit Tigers reliever Joel Zumaya said after a successful minor-league appearance that he is ready to return to the big leagues after struggling with shoulder problems. -In more Tigers news, designated hitter Marcus Thames is destined for the 15-day DL because of a strained rib cage. -Rehabbing New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez ran bases for the first time since his preseason surgery. |
