koji0409.jpg-Baltimore's Koji Uehara, a 34-year-old rookie from Japan, won his major-league debut by pitching five innings of one-hit ball against the Yankees.

-The Milwaukee Brewers' Yovani Gallardo became the first pitcher ever to hit a home run off Randy Johnson, and Gallardo also pitched into the seventh inning to pick up the victory as the Brewers beat the Giants, 4-2, in Johnson's San Francisco debut.

-Down 10-3 and threatened with an 0-3 start, the defending World Series champion Phillies scored eight times in the seventh inning, then held off the Atlanta Braves for a 12-11 victory at Citizens Bank Park in what was probably the most exciting game of the young season so far.

-Not to be outdone, the Oakland Athletics scored three runs in the eighth and three more in the ninth, erasing a 4-0 deficit to beat the Los Angeles Angels, 6-4. Old friend Nomar Garciaparra knocked home the game-tying run in the ninth.

-Manny Ramirez hit a tie-breaking, two-run double in the seventh inning as the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the San Diego Padres, 5-2.

-Kansas City's Zach Greinke won for the first time in seven career decisions at U.S. Cellular Field, pitching six-plus innings of shutout ball in the Royals' 3-0 victory over the White Sox.

-Miguel Cabrera hit two home runs and Brandon Inge hit his third home run in three games as the Detroit Tigers beat the Toronto Blue Jays, 5-1, in Toronto.

In other news:

-Fox Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that the Diamondbacks last year withdrew a three-year, $54-million contract extension offer to ace Brandon Webb because of concerns raised by private insurance companies over Webb's arm. The Diamondbacks have temporarily shut Webb down because of recurring stiffness and soreness in his right shoulder.

-Alex Rodriguez remains on target to work out Monday at the Yankees' minor-league complex in Tampa, Fla., manager Joe Girardi said last night.

-Ichiro Suzuki is improving from his bleeding ulcer and will serve as a designated hitter today in an extended spring-training game in Peoria, Ill.

-Braves veterans Chipper Jones and Garret Anderson were both scratched from yesterday's starting lineup, Jones with a bruised thumb and Anderson with a calf strain, although Anderson came in to pinch hit and ended the game with a strikeout.

-Mike Redmond, the starting catcher for the Twins while Joe Mauer is on the disabled list, may soon join Mauer on the DL because of a groin injury (Minneapolis Star-Tribune).
