BOSTON - As first reported on the SoxBlog, the Red Sox purchased the contract of Daniel Bard from Triple-A Pawtucket and he's activated for tonight's game against Tampa. The Sox made room for Bard on the 40-man roster by designating left-handed reliever Javier Lopez for assignment.

The 23-year-old Bard enjoyed a superb spring training, striking out 14 over 10 1/3 shutout innings. He's been even more impressive at Pawtucket this season with a 1.13 ERA in 11 outings. In just 16 innings, he has struck out 29.

Red Sox manager Terry Francona called Bard - a first round draft pick in the 2006 draft - "such a bright piece of our future."
"Is he here to stay? We really don't know," said Francona. "In the meantimne, enjoy it. The experience will be fantastic."

We'll have more from Bard soon.
