BOSTON _ J.D. Drew will not play Saturday due to a sore quad. Rocco Baldelli is playing right field for the Red Sox.

"His legs have been sore," said Red Sox manager Terry Francona. "One quad has been barking at him a little bit. We talked to him about it, it was sore the other night during the game and we didn't really have anyone to put in. I talked to him after the game and had him check in with me [Friday]."

Francona told him if he felt comfortable playing Friday night, then he would be given Saturday off. Drew is expected to be back in the lineup Sunday night and Monday is an off day.

"It's not pulled, but it's just sore," said Francona. "We don't want it to turn into something more. We kind of had this planned all along."

Drew took early BP and looked fine in the box.

"We're just trying to use common sense. Certainly we like having good hitters in the lineup, but when you make a mistake, once you make it, you can't go back."
