WOONSOCKET, R.I. (AP) - A former owner of the Pawtucket Red Sox has been cleared of charges that he tried to defraud a friend who had loaned him more than $30,000.
Prosecutors have dropped a charge of writing a fraudulent check over $1,000 against Phil Anez of Uxbridge, Mass.
The friend went to police alleging that the 69-year-old Anez borrowed $32,000 and tried to repay the debt with two checks that bounced.
A spokesman for Attorney General Patrick Lynch tells The Call of Woonsocket that after reviewing the evidence, prosecutors decided that Anez had not committed a crime.
The spokesman says the case is a disagreement between friends.
Anez owned the Triple-A club in the mid-1970s. In 1976, he sold the team to Marvin Adelson, who later sold it to current owner Ben Mondor.
