One of the top players in the Red Sox system, Double-A outfielder Josh Reddick, reported to Triple-A Pawtucket tonight to begin a rehab program on a strained left oblique suffered Wednesday.

Sending a Double-A player to Triple-A to rehab is a very rare move, but Portland is on the road this week in New Britain and Binghamton -- and Reddick is a valuable commodity for Boston. Baseball America rated him the organization's fourth-best prospect, and he hit .500 during major league spring training this March, while making several impressive plays in the field.

Oblique injuries can linger if not treated properly, so Reddick has been limited to icing the injury, and can do no rehab or baseball activity yet. He has never injured the muscle before.

Reddick hurt the muscle during a full swing during Wednesday's Portland Sea Dogs game, and he ran down the line to first in obvious pain.

He will stay with Pawtucket through the weekend, and if the pain does not improve, could go to Boston early next week for further care.

Leading off for Portland, Reddick is hitting .290 with six home runs, seven RBI and 17 runs scored.
